| Oxford, Oxfordshire & The ChilternsWe can not do justice in describing OXFORD in the limited space here. Oxford is a historic and beautiful city, a University city that dates back to 1188, a city of architectural splendour with fine museums and the Bodleian Library one the largest in the world. Much of Oxford's university comprises a tangle of 41 colleges and halls in various parts of the city centre side by side with shops and offices. The roof top views from Sheldonian Theatre, Carfax Tower, or the church towers of St. Mary the Virgin and St. Michael are most rewarding. The panorama is best on a sunny day when the slanting lights pick out the honey-gold outline of Oxford's famous dreamin gspires. As you would anticipate Oxford has a wealth of restaurants, theatres and historic pubs and inns as wll as a covered market. A few minutes' drive from Oxford, in almost any direction, will reveal the country's scenic countryside. Apart from West & North OXFORDSHIRE in the east is the VALE OF THE WHITE HORSE and the town of WANTAGE King Alfred's birthplace. In the south, the town of WALLINGFORD granted it's charter in 1115. To the north is the market town of THAME bordering onto the county of Buckinghamshire, the Vale of Aylesbury and the undiscovered Chiltern Hills. These rolling hills, woodland trails, miles of footpaths including the ancient Ridegway, the Cross Bucks and North Bucks Ways lead you to discover grand houses like Waddeson Manor, Hughenden Manor, Chenies Manor and in the south of the county, Cliveden.
Enjoy the unspoilt countryside and stunning views from Ivenhoe Beacon, Beacon Hill or Bledlow Ridge.
BEACONSFIELD has the oldest model village in the world while farther north you have tomorrow's city to-day, MILTON KEYNES with its renowned shopping centre. Bletchley Park home of the first computer and at the northern point of the county the pretty ancient village of Olney - today known for its pancake race.
