Within an hour or so of London you can journey through the counties of Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire seeing the ever-changing scenery of the Chiltern Hills, the Ridgeway Path, Ivenhoe Beacon, Brill on the Hill and Bledlow Ridge, with many of our country cottages set among these diverse landscapes.
There are miles and miles of rolling hills, woodland trails and footpaths which will lead you to discover grand houses like Waddesdon Manor and Hughendon Manor. The countryside is simply quite lovely.
Market towns such as Wallingford, Wantage and Abingdon-on-Thames are of great historical interest covering the east and south of the region. To the north is the Buckinghamshire county town of Aylesbury as well as Thame with its wide main street and centuries old buildings, now home to curiosity shops, pubs and restaurants.
And of course, there is the City of Oxford. The University dates to 1188 and has sent many scholars through its doors and continues to do so today thus developing Oxford as one of the cosmopolitan centres in the country. Beautiful buildings such as The Bodleian Library, The Sheldonian Theatre and The Ashmolean Museum are incredible. The views across the rooftops from Carfax Tower or the church tower of St Mary the Virgin are well worth the hundreds of stairs you need to climb! Don’t forget the camera, it’s stunning. Take a trip on the river from Folly Bridge to pretty Iffley Lock; walk through Christchurch Meadows or jump on a ‘hop on hop off’ open top bus. There are hundreds of things to experience when you stay in one of our Oxfordshire holiday cottages.
Whatever you choose to do, Oxford is a must on anyone’s list of places to visit! Morse liked it, you will too!
