The meandering course of the non-tidal river Thames through south east Oxfordshire, South Buckinghamshire and Berkshire with the Chiltern Hills creates a backdrop for the Thames Valley.
There are a thousand years of history to discover on the 20-mile stretch of the Thames from Hurley to Runneymede, from the signing of the Magna Carta to the peaceful JFK Memorial and the Magna Carta Memorial. Particularly poignant is The Air Forces Memorial, with amazing views across to Windsor Great Park and Windsor Castle to the west, and, to the east, London and beyond.
All along the Thames sit pretty riverside towns and villages such as Goring-on-Thames, Streatley-on-Thames, Henley-on-Thames and Sandford-on-Thames, as this historic waterway winds its way from the source in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, through the Thames Barrier to the sea.
The county of Berkshire has something for everyone! There’s the Oracle Shopping Centre in Reading with riverside bistros and cafés, racing at Ascot or Newbury, Legoland at Windsor, Eton College and Eton Chapel and of course, Windsor Castle.
With London on the doorstep this is a fabulous area to enjoy a country cottage holiday!
