There is evidence of Witney having been settled as far back as the Iron Age and Roman times but Witney is best known from the Middle Ages for producing high quality blankets, exporting them as far as America. The last blanket factory there was closed at the beginning of this century. Nowadays the most prolific modern industry, is ale making at the Wychwood Brewery which is the UK's largest producer of organic ales. The brewery is named after Wychwood Forest which is an ancient forest on the edge of Witney. Tours of the brewery are available by appointment. For those who enjoy cars and other vehicles there is the Oxford Bus and Morris Motors Museum to visit
as well as having a leisure centre and a multiplex cinema, Witney offers good shopping at small local shops and several major high street stores. There are a variety of restaurants, cafes and pubs to choose from.
